September 17 through 23 marks the third annual National Security Officer Appreciation Week. This month is also recognized as National Preparedness Month and Security Professionals play a major role in keeping our communities and businesses safe and secure.

We must all recognize and be grateful for the continual contributions of Security Professionals, who not only are often the first line of defense against natural disasters, civil unrest, violence and terrorist attacks, but who can also provide a friendly face and welcoming gesture in a time of need.

The Freedonia Group reports that U.S. guarding expenditures are expected to increase to $27.3 billion by 2021. The rise of this sector demands a dramatic shift in public perception about this critically important job.

These industrious, highly trained men and women are first responders who have a wide range of skills—from the sensitivity to deal with children separated from their parents in a mall to the ability to respond to and effectively address emergencies of all types. Our community protectors and guardians are sometimes put in high-risk situations as they confront and detain criminals engaged in theft, trespassing, gang activity and other criminal activity. They also save countless lives by administering CPR. What’s more, they offer a peace of mind by finding your lost car key or ID that fell out of your pocket, or by simply delivering a “have a nice day,” as you leave your office.

This week serves as our opportunity to unite in recognition of these professionals who dedicate themselves to serving our communities. How can you participate?

  • When you see a Security Professional where you live or work, say thank you

  • Share a message of appreciation for a Security Professional at aus.com/ThankYouSecurity

  • Display your thanks on social media using #ThankYouSecurity

Customers, employees and visitors are comforted by seeing expertly-trained security personnel on the job. Keeping people safe and secure where they work, live and play requires a partnership among security providers, law enforcement and the communities and commercial institutions they serve.

So, the next time your path crosses with one of these unsung heroes, consider delivering your message of thanks personally. And, remember, Security Professionals not only deserve our respect and gratitude during National Security Officer Appreciation Week, but it doesn’t hurt to offer it every single day of the year.
