Active Assailant incidents are frightening regardless of the location in which they occur. When they occur on a school campus, however, these shocking events feel even more devastating.
Although Active Assailant incidents on school campuses may seem sudden and unplanned, research shows there is a typical “path to violence” commonly followed by most assailants. Understanding this path and knowing how to intervene at each step should therefore be the foundation of any school’s Active Assailant preparedness plan.

RACHELLE LOYEAR Rachelle Loyear leads the Allied Universal® Security Risk Management approach to customer program development. She is also Head of the Academy of Integrated Security, which is dedicated to driving Allied Universal's mission of helping customers find and deploy the right combination of security professionals, cutting-edge technology, and processes and procedures to secure their organizations most effectively. FRANK SPANO Frank Spano serves as Allied Universal's Director of Education Security Services. In addition to his service as a professor and senior academic administrator, he has served as Founder and Executive Director of the Counterterrorism Institute and as the Director of National Security Policy at the Investigative Project on Terrorism. Frank has also served as a Special Agent in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations' Antiterrorism Specialty Team, and as the Continuity of Operations and Enterprise Risk Management Subject Matter Expert supporting the US Department of Health and Human Services. Frank is also honored to be a member of this year’s FEMA National Emergency Management Executive Academy. |
